Average RTP — the bookmaker is capturing a significant portion of stakes.
How it works
The RTP (Return to Player) measures the theoretical percentage a bookmaker redistributes to bettors on a given market. An RTP of 95 % means that, in theory, for every €100 staked, €95 is paid back. The remaining 5 % represents the bookmaker's margin.
The calculation is straightforward: for each outcome, divide 1 by the odds to get the implied probability. The sum of these probabilities always exceeds 100 % — that excess is the margin. The RTP is simply 100 divided by that sum. For example, on a three-way market with odds of 1.90, 3.00 and 3.50, the sum of implied probabilities is roughly 120 %, giving an RTP of around 83 %.
Comparing RTP across bookmakers lets you identify the most competitive operators. On major markets like the 1X2 for European football, the best bookmakers typically post RTP figures between 93 % and 96 %. Below 85 %, the margin is particularly steep. Keep in mind that RTP varies by sport, market and operator: niche markets such as correct score or Asian handicap often carry lower RTPs than headline markets.
